What Are Fascia Boards And Why Do We Use Them?

Fascia boards are on all of our houses - but can you spot them? You may be wondering whether they are on the interior or exterior of your house. It's no surprise that they may not spring to mind instantly, as they are often covered up.

What Are Fascia Boards?

Fascia boards are the horizontal or angled bands that cover the exposed ends of the roof or trusses. They are often hidden by gutters, therefore this can be the reason many people won't easily identify them. Fascia boards can be constructed from aluminium, vinyl, wood and unplasticized vinyl and they all have different qualities.

Aluminium Fascia Boards

Aluminium fascia boards can weatherproof wood fascia and as they are easily moveable, they can be wrapped around wood. Thus, as they protect the wood it can last longer. However, the instillation can be slightly more expensive.

Vinyl Fascia Boards

Another name for vinyl fascia boards is polyvinyl chloride, commonly known as PVC. This can include plasticisers so that the material is flexible and can be added to wood fascia boards to improve their life quality, whilst also making them more aesthetically pleasing.

Wood Fascia Boards

Wood fascia boards are widely used as they are the most affordable material and are usually made of fir, pine or spruce. However, this means it is not the most weatherproof as water can make it rot. To mitigate this risk, wood fascia boards should be primed and painted to increase their lifespan.

Unplasticised Vinyl Fascia Boards

Unplasticised Vinyl Fascia Boards are typically known as UPVC and they are more durable as they do not contain plasticisers. They are also more stylish, whilst being easier to maintain as they are weatherproof.

Why Do We Use Fascia Boards?

Fascia boards have some key purposes that are vital for every house for many different reasons. They can block water from entering your house as they can stop it from getting through the roof. Additionally, fascia boards secure the gutters so they are steady on your house. Moreover, they add a neat touch to the look of your house and stop insects and birds from accessing the property.
