Combined Hardie® Plank Starter Strip & Ventilation Profile

We are a trade supplier of Hardie® Plank fibre cement cladding and all the trims you need to complete the cladding for your project.

Hardie® Plank starter strip and ventilation profile is compatible with our Hardie® Plank cladding boards. The starter profile comes in three different thicknesses to fit 25mm, 38mm and 50mm battens.

25mm is technically the minimum recommended size batten that should be used to achieve a free-flow ventilation gap between the cladding layer and substrate. This is in order to achieve the required gap of 20mm. It is also important that there is at least a 10mm air inlet and air outlet gap at the base and the roofline above doors and windows. We recommend that a perforated enclosure is utilized to avoid pesticides going through the ventilation gap.

Installing the Hardie® Plank Starter Strip and Ventilation Profile

If you decide to install your Hardie® Plank cladding horizontally, the easiest way is to use the Hardie Plank combined Hardie® Plank starter strip and ventilation profile. You could also cut a 30mm wide strip from a Hardie® Plank cladding sheet in order to kick out the first plank to march the lap of the wall. To line up the lower edge of the starter strip with the bottom of the vertical battens, you should nail the 30mm wide strip you’ve cut off the cladding sheet along the front face of the battens. This would also ensure there is lap spacing for the first row of cladding boards. If you don’t add the starter strip, the ‘kick-out’ on the wall will appear incoherent in the following courses.

Before you start installing the first layer of your cladding  you should apply the Hardie® Plank Starter trim to the wall and mark 170mm up from the bottom edge of the starter strip. It is crucial that this line is 100% horizontal as this will be the top of the first row of your fibre cement cladding. Finally, this would also ensure that 10mm drip edge is achieved at the bottom edge of the cladding.
