WALL TIES EXPLAINED – LINKING LEAVES FOR LASTING STRUCTURE

WALL TIES EXPLAINED – LINKING LEAVES FOR LASTING STRUCTURE

Wall ties are metal components used to connect the two leaves of cavity walls, ensuring they act as a single structural unit and resisting external forces.

Main types of wall ties:

  • Masonry-to-Masonry Ties: Such as VE4, VE2, EN2, used in new cavity wall construction
  • Low Thermal Conductivity Ties: NEUTRAS series, ideal for thermal efficiency
  • Heavy-Duty Safety Ties: VST1, VS6, VE1 for high-rise or commercial builds
  • Remedial Ties: HELI, REM, and V30, for retrofitting or replacing corroded ties
  • Starter Ties: V63 and SST for joining new walls to existing ones

Tested to BS EN 845-1 standards and available in various sizes and load ratings.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRODUCT FOR YOUR BUILD

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRODUCT FOR YOUR BUILD

With many types and sizes available, selecting the correct metalwork and ties depends on your building's structure, materials, and intended loads.

Considerations:

  • Building Height: Heavier-duty ties for buildings over 10m
  • Cavity Width: Ties and hangers must suit gap dimensions
  • Material Compatibility: Galvanised for dry environments, stainless for exposed/industrial zones
  • Movement Needs: Use debonded or movement ties where expansion joints are necessary

Always refer to the latest British Standards and ensure installation matches design specs.
